Mohamed Ismail

Mohamed Ismail Shawki, otherwise know as Ismail, is a Cairo-based visual artist. Even though he graduated from the High Institute of Cinema in Egypt, he works primarily with sculpture and installation. Replete with humour, his artistic practice resituates objects from everyday urban life to articulate the broader struggles and pressures facing contemporary society. Including black plastic bags, street barriers, and the Google Chrome dinosaur, Ismail investigates the visual indicators of a neglected public infrastructure, a culture of shame, and authoritarianism in urban planning.
